Cheltenham’s Supreme Novices Hurdle sets off ten minutes before the start of the new PLSA Conference today on Tuesday 11th March.
When Torsten stands up to address us, we will know who the world’s Supreme Novice Hurdler is. We may not catch the first few words of Emma Douglas if we have our buds and phones linked to ITV X.
This race starts 1.20, finishes 1.30 + and in it is the Supreme Novice Hurdle Pension Minister.

Irish horses have taken over as have Irish riders – not a precedent for Torsten (we hope)!
Pension Ministers and jockeys
I did not want to make this comparison but I will. Former pension minister Guy Opperman has a horse in training and he is aiming to be the oldest winner when he gets down to a weight to ride the horse. He wanted me to have a bottle of wine- I’m dry and we’ll hold it till I go back on the hooch or we find a place where we can have some food.
Racing is a tough sport for those who entertain us
I don’t think that Torsten Bell is a racing man – well not from his Wiki. He will be competing for our attention with re-runs of the Cheltenham re-run on our phones.
I don’t think that any of us would call Mr Opperman a supreme novice but it is a phrase that we might apply to Torsten Bell.
The winning jockey in the Supreme Novices Hurdle 2023 came to a tragic end last week. Michael O’Sullivan will not be known to most people in Edinburgh but to those in Cheltenham he will be remembered as the great jockey who never had his career.

Racing in an unfortunate clash
It is unfortunate that for many of the friends I’ve built on bus trips organised by Pension PlayPen to Cheltenham, there will be a difficulty about where to be 11-13th of March. But on the 14th of March there is the Gold Cup and the Investment Conference will be over.
Torsten is the Supreme Novice!Will he be at Cheltenham once he has done his speech or will he stick it out like we will? Will he find his way to Cheltenham to see if Galopin Des Champs will win it for Ireland and for Michael?
