Paul Trickett loses his long battle with cancer

Paul Trickett

There have been two people we have been praying for – Fraser and Paul, both have left us in a week . Paul Trickett is dead . After many years struggling with cancer, his fight is over.

Paul Trickett began his career at the National Coal Board as a graduate trainee, before becoming head of Mineworkers’ Pension Scheme (MPS) Pensions Administration and the scheme secretary of MPS.

He then moved to Towers Watson (now WTW), where he spent 13 years as an investment consultant, latterly as EMEA head of investment consulting. In this role he pioneered much of the investment practice in DC  that has become received wisdom today

In 2011, he joined Goldman Sachs Asset Management as Europe, the Middle East and Africa head of global solutions, before leaving in 2013 to undertake a variety of trustee and non-executive roles – roles that most recently included being trustee chair of the £14bn Santander Pension Scheme, the £17bn National Grid Pension Scheme and the £12bn MPS.

He was the Trustee of Zurich’s staff scheme and the original IGC chair for L&G, which is how I got to know him.  He had to resign his position at L&G  when he became non-executive director and chair of investment committee at Aviva Life Holdings, and non-executive director at Thomas Miller.

He had previously been chair of Railpen Investments, the in-house fund manager of the Railways Pension Scheme.

How Paul helped me

Paul helped me personally to understand investment in DC schemes and he looked after my DC and DB benefits in the first half of the last decade. I wrote on this blog to memorialise that and I have stayed in touch with him through the battle that dominated his latter years.

I wished him good luck on this blog – but he had rotten luck. He never smoked but was diagnosed in 2019 with lung cancer.

When he spoke of his illness, it was  of the good fortune he had compared to others who weren’t getting such treatment.

He retired to the lakes, swam in Windermere and did a lot of running.

My heart goes out to those who knew him better, especially his family – he was a big-hearted man and a force for good.

Paul Trickett – a big thank you!
