Opperman’s right, this country needs liberalism (from Starmer and Reeves)

There is something in the air and it smells rotten, it is the stench of extremism and its coming from Reform UK and the Green party. I am with Guy Opperman who has written something I agree with (indeed spoken on this subject in a way I agree with)

As a nation we cannot afford to pull up the seeds of plants appearing in this early summer of a Government because of a long wet miserable winter.

We cannot afford to damn the Pension Schemes Act because it has too much conviction (and mandation) for our liking. We are a progressive nation which has succeeded by taking steps forward that seem risky, I fear that what has come so far will be nothing to the mess that would follow if we have no leader but only a fight between those who have supported Starmer and have lost their way.

There is a liberalism which has been lost , it is not just the extreme parties that worry me, it is the swing towards them by both major parties .

There are important checks on Labour. I mean the Unions who have some control of the party. I hope that they will allow Labour to continue to fulfill what it was voted in to do. I am not in a union but I support the work they do. I hope they are not the architects of Labour’s undoing. There should also be checks on Conservatism, we cannot have them competing with Reform UK.

Right in the middle is a decent country which is being rocked from side to side by extremists. We do have a Liberal party which I think acts as a moderator and first class commentator on what is in front of them. We need those centrists to speak as decent republicans and democrats speak in America, to stop the excess of extremism.

America has a Constitution, we do not. Our constitution is common sense, it is what I see guiding Britain forward. It is a common sense I see in Steve Webb, in Opperman and in Torsten Bell though in different ways. I am glad we have a Pension Schemes Act and legislation for multi-employer CDC. We have the safety of primary legislation and we need to back that up with secondary legislation and regulation to finish the job.

I fear for what we are doing , if we lose the centrist thrust that Starmer brings. If we lose the liberal and trusted finances of Reeves. They are not charismatic, they do not sell themselves well, but they are the common sense we have been missing and we need them for a full term of Government.

I will say it again, I am not a Labour voter but I support this Government that was voted in to bring stability after a period of mahem.

  1. Edmund Truell says:

Sorry Henry. Driven by ideology not common sense. Common sense was see that if you drive 11.000 millionaires out of the country, economically and financially the country will be worse off. Or if you tax private schools out of existence and affordability the state education system picks up the bill. Or if your tax farms, farmers will just give up.. etc etc
