Luke and the cult of holy innocence

I am a big fan of the  the “holy innocent” a Saint who is too young to have done wrong and is therefore imbued with fantastic powers, like St Rumwold who preached a sermon while barely out of the womb

Tonight, another holy or maybe wholly innocent, will perform in the final of the World Darts Championship. Luke Littler will play Luke Humphreys  for the Championship of the World.

Last night’s back story

The 16-year-old Littler eased past Brendan Dolan to reach the final four and has now defeated former World Champion Rob Cross for a place in Wednesday’s final. Cross – who won the tournament back in 2018 on debut – booked his place in the semi-finals after a miraculous display on Monday, fighting back from 4-0 down to defeat the in-form Chris Dobey 5-4. But he had no chance of a comeback this time as he went down 6-2.

In the other semi-final, pre-tournament favourite Luke Humphries hammered Scott Williams and will meet Littler in the final. Humphries reached this stage after a comprehensive win over Dave Chisnall, while Williams produced one of the shocks of the tournament to defeat three-time World Champion Michael van Gerwen in the quarter-finals – but couldn’t repeat the feat, losing 6-0 in the semis.

Darts is not everyone’s cup of tea, but even the most implacable opponent of the game would have been hard pressed not to have switched over from the bore-draw at Stratford to watch the pizza/donner/omelette munching Littler knock in a 132 with two bulls and a double sixteen- I mean!

This kind of performance is right up there with St Rumwold in the hagiography charts.

Some might say that Luke has committed the original sin of promoting the Sun (well some scousers) but I say, he’s #only16 .

St Luke – the holy innocent

The nation has taken this podgy chap with his nappy-wearing antics to its heart. Like St Rumwold , he was performing miracles while still in diapers and he’s already won sports personality of the year 2024 (for me).

So tonight I will be glued to the screen to see if Luke Humphreys can slay Littler and whether the young innocent cherub will suffer a martyr’s death.

Or will Luke Littler knock the newly anointed world #1 Humphreys for six – or should I say seven?

For more in holy innocents, read St Rumwold (aka Rumbold’s) life story here

This will be a final according to twin Lukes. The bookies clearly don’t believe in miracles
