Ever lost your identity? I did on LinkedIn and it feels weird.

I lost my identity yesterday while travelling about London. One moment I was Henry Tapper , enjoying myself on Linked in , the next I had no way to identify myself. The process of identifying myself led to a what the social media company called “simple identification that required me to input a Captcha of my humanity and a series of questions based on cars, busses, bicycles and so on that appeared upon my telephone and laptop.

There is no way to prove you are who you are on Linked in any other way than by logging on and if your password has been forgotten, you have a limited number of goes before you have compromised your identity to a point where you cease to exist – at least until you can find a way to prove yourself.

There is a way to get help but it is a tortuous process to get to customer support

and when you do you follow this procedure you find  yourself identifying yourself to “persona”, software that matches a photo you take of yourself to your driving license.

It is a tricky procedure which ends with a promise that you’ll get your identity back!

For those who have got into a rhythm of being annoyed by me (and there are 30,000 of you).  I can assure you that I’m still around and though I’ve lost my identity, LinkedIn will give it back with 5 days!
