The best advertisement for social care and pensions we’ve had this year

Glyn Jenkins and Andrew Dobbie who made this deal happen as Pension Officers at Unison

This is a truly wonderful news. My friend Andy Young wrote me when reading my first blog

This is great.  Excellent to have someone like Yvette Cooper on board. Hopefully it can be developed separately from the social care reform where I fear reality will bite soon.

This is the point that goes beyond pensions. Social care is delivered by the 100,000 plus carers who will be auto-enrolled into workplace collective pensions.

All the details will take time to emerge. We will want to know the benefit structure, what will be taken from the fund to pay expenses and how the money will be invested, who will administer and how the governance will work. For now we have one duty which is to thank those who made this happen.

I am gob-smacked that Andrew Dobbie and Glyn Jenkins of Unison have got this away. There are 19,000 companies employing carers. Most of us know carers through friends and family who depend on them. I am lucky to have been tutored in areas of pensions I would have otherwise have known nothing by Glyn. He is far too old to be working (by most people’s thinking) but he taught me one phrase this year

Henry, simplicity is very hard

I am very pleased that they are getting a good deal from this Labour Government and getting the pension upgrade through a CDC scheme.

Well done the DWP and Yvette Cooper who must have worked together at unusual speed. Yvette Cooper was appointed Secretary of State for Health and Social Care on 20 July 2026. She was previously Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs , these are not places where pension policy are discussed.

But most of all I admire the wider trade unions. Andrew Dobbie’s most humble comment to me related to Terry Pullinger who was in the conversation;

Without Terry and CWU we wouldn’t even have the legal option, so he and colleagues are the grandparents and I hope are happy too.

Everyone involved in moving our savers from pots to pensions will say hear hear to that!
