London’s musical Carnival – free and brilliant – with a pension supremo!

I am getting a bit of gip for being into pensions and spending the bank holiday weekend in West London at the Carnival. Big Zuu, a longtime friend to pensions was also there. Let’s not count pensions out of Carnival

His influence lives on , on this blog!

This is a fast moving event, we had Usain showing us how Jamaica moves through the streets of London

We had a great day, it would have been greater if GWR hadn’t abandoned running trains from Windsor to Slough but it was so cheery coming up with the girls we met on the Bakerloo from Waterloo. I’m not so sure I enjoyed seeing a bunch of carnival goers being stopped by the police and arrested for possession on Bishop’s Bridge Road (the one we got the bus to Cheltenham). Out of 140 arrests, 35 were on the way in. Wow!

But I got a blast from the kids J’ouvert in great weather and then some more blast as the day wore on by the sound systems.

I walked past the flat in Powis Square that I used to stay with friends I knew when a teenager (coming up from London). My first Carnival was in 1977, I didn’t remember much about it, till I was back on the squares and streets that are just the same.

Notting Hill Carnival is even an art fest!

It is absolutely brilliant that London, principally its Caribbean community has been going a lot more than 50 years and that it still makes hundred- no millions – of people happy.

Glastonbury and its ilk may suit those who love the country (and pay for it) but London folk love its streets and squares and everything that goes with cramming so much into a couple of square miles.

As a white man who hopes to make 50 years of revelling within a couple of years, thanks to all who organise this great event and make it Big Zuu and Usain Boult’s too!

Could you beat this?
