I am waking early on the morning after the morning before, the morning when America and Russia were supposed to have a deal to put to the team dropped from the tournament, Ukraine.
“The fact that this meeting even took place – at the invitation of President Trump, on American soil, without Ukraine present, and with zero concessions from Russia – is an undeserved reward for Putin,” – Gregory Meeks – Democrat statement
In the end, the world looked on with dismay while America, represented by President Trump failed to do anything with an ill-prepared summit in an out of the way place.
Meanwhile, Russia is having a good time smashing up Eastern Ukraine and Ukraine looks like a country furiously frustrated at the failure of the West to do any better against its enemy than was displayed to the world last night. You can read nothing about nothing on the BBC or any other website

But if anyone thinks that the deep-rooted problem we have with Russia will be resolved on social media by an American President not putting in the work, then they will believe this meeting was a step forward. The rest of us will hope that Europe and other parts of the world that see Russia’s behaviour as deplorable, tell Trump that this kind of “show-pony” diplomacy, devalues the historic respect we have for humanitarianism expressed through democracy.
Shame on Trump and on those who follow in his wake. This is not what we expect as leadership , Putin is not a leader but a tyrant and Russia is a pariah state on the fringes of Europe but aligned to something we can best think of as global criminality.
We have no time for a Trump- Putin love in. We need urgent measures that isolate Russia economically and diplomatically from America and the West and this is not the outcome Britain wanted. Ukraine matters enough for us to have opened our doors to its refugees and its why we are raising money to reinforce our defences, so that we do not have an open door to the criminality of Russia and those like Russia.
“Western media are on the verge of completely losing it,” Maria Zakharova, Russia’s foreign ministry spokeswoman, wrote on social media. “They spent three years telling everyone Russia was isolated, and today they saw the beautiful red carpet laid out for the Russian president in the US.”
What possible advantage can be had by giving Russia the opportunity to crow? It is time for Western leaders, including our own to express disgust at what happened in Alaska.
We had premier league football kicking off last night, a footballer refused to play when being called out for racial discrimination by someone in the crowd. We do decency in this country, we won’t have it. We govern ourselves with proper dignity when playing games.
But here we are not playing football, we are playing with the lives of Ukraine and Russian people killed in Ukraine for a tyrant’s will to be carried out. That is not football, that is life and death. America has brought its behavior in all things into question. We expect Trump to be brought to account by his own people too. We need governance at all levels but it starts at the top.
I think David Harris sums this up well.
We can only watch in disbelief as this game show imploses :
Signs to watch:
Major court rulings, indictments, or convictions; large civil judgments.
Sustained declines in small‑donor inflows and major donor defections.
Prominent GOP leaders publicly withdrawing support or endorsing alternatives.
Significant drops in polls among independents and suburban voters.
A rival consolidating endorsements, fundraising, and primary wins while adopting Trumpian policies.
America is in for a rough ride lets hope for a realignment or at least a lame duck President in the mid terms
