1 Response to Pension Tax Rule Cutting NHS Capacity

  1. Byron McKeeby says:

The BMA is calling on the NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) to urgently rectify ‘completely unacceptable’ errors in doctors’ pensions savings statements.

It’s understood that at least 757 doctors have received inaccurate statements for 2023/24, potentially preventing them from being able to complete self-assessment tax returns before the deadline at the end of the month.

The errors include miscalculations of pension savings, which are distorting total amounts and making it impossible for doctors to accurately report their tax status to HMRC.

The BMA believes the NHSBSA should report itself to the Pensions Regulator over the mistakes.

TPR says “The Pensions Regulator is responsible for regulating the governance and administration of public service schemes in the UK.

“We provide information, education and assistance to help scheme managers, pension boards, administrators, employers and others to comply with the law and strive towards best practice. We work with scheme advisory boards to make sure our messages reach the broadest audience possible.

“Where necessary we will use our powers to put things right and to keep schemes on track.”

Neil Record, someone whose opinions I don’t always agree with, but I certainly make time to consider them, says this:

    Criticism of Generosity

Record consistently argues that public sector pensions, including those for doctors, are excessively generous and heavily subsidised, leading to a financial burden for taxpayers.

    “Ponzi Scheme” Analogy

Record has described the system as a “Ponzi scheme,” arguing that the true cost of these pensions is not being accurately reflected and that the system is unsustainable.

    Call for Reform

Record advocates for reforms to the public sector pension system, including potentially reducing benefits or increasing contributions from employees.

Record has stated (gone on the record one might say) that doctors’ pensions should be raided more, not less, suggesting that the current arrangement is too generous.

Record has criticised the British Medical Association (BMA) for seemingly forgetting how extraordinarily generous the current pension arrangement is.
