He didn’t get an OBE for nothing

It’s a (frankly worrying) 60 years since The Who articulated the generational divide that seemed to us palpable at the time, and 55 years since the very first Glastonbury Festival… when anyone over the age of 25 would probably have seemed well old.

So, it’s (on balance) extremely reassuring that two thirds of the public today say that older people shouldn’t feel out of place at the current Glastonbury Festival… now moved far beyond its bucolic roots when entrance was just £1 and included free milk.

A “generational divide” in terms of music and popular culture isn’t the real issue today, with many of today’s younger people big fans of 60s and 70s music. What should be of more concern, says a new report, is whether they feel the odds are stacked against them when it comes to housing and childcare costs.

“A country,” the report concludes, “that works only for retired people is not one that can work for long, and we need policies that address our demographic problems and build consensus for a new system that will serve our grandchildren and great grandchildren well.”

In other news today, Dame Judi Dench speaks out on behalf of the one in three people living with dementia but do not have a diagnosis. Care England is also getting behind an initiative to ensure residents of care homes get regular hearing tests. And there’s a legal win in the ongoing pensions compensation battle for Waspi women.

Having seen the inside of a number of prisons in my time (not for the reasons you might suspect) the report on the problems being experienced within a prison with a rapidly ageing population come as no surprise. The example highlighted is a microcosm of a national situation where a growing proportion of the prisoners are in their 60s, 70s and even 80s… often living with chronic conditions and many using wheelchairs and walking aids.

Our prisons simply weren’t built for this.

Uncertain WiFi signals in foreign parts may make Later Life AGEnda service a little bumpy for the next few days… my apologies!
