Wille Mullins after his amazing win!
Last night’s jamboree for horses, jockeys, trainers and a few spectators was really about TV viewers of which my family counted ourselves a part! I suspect that over this side of the pond we had a rather better time than our American friends!
It was a fantastic night of humiliation of the cocky Americans, a second such episode after the Ryder cup victory for Europe earlier this autumn.
The classic turf horse is an Irish jumper

The BBC didn’t mess about
Throughout the later hours of last night we watched the humiliation of the United States by the great Irishman, Willie Mullins , (for once not Aidan O’Brien) whose jumping Ethical Diamond , out-ran the best of the world to become its Classic turf runner.
Don’t forget Ethical Diamond could only finish seventh in the Scottish Champion Hurdle in April. Perhaps we should relocate the Breeders Cup to Perth.

The look in the eye of the Irish horse!
Classic Dirt Horse is Japanese
We watched a Japanese and rider trounce a field of American “champions“against the advices of all the American commentators and tipsters.

We watched a Japanese trainer who wouldn’t speak American, explain how his horse “Forever Young” (tip to Dylan) beat the Americans on “dirt” to be the Classic Dirt horse.
That winning feeling!🏆

It was a very commercial explanation from the Japanese team, they wanted to be seen doing racing on the dirt better (commercially).
Notable Speech – the best turf miler in the world!
Finally we watched Charlie Appleby, the English trainer explain how Notable Speech trance anything left worth beating in the turf mile.
- Appleby
- Appleby !
- Appleby!!
That’s a before , during and after the win of this horse. this jockey!
Here is the wonderful performance of the English horse!
American commentators eat their words
My final joy was to watch the American team of commentators who had tipped us their horses in these big races , slumped in their chairs , trying to explain to each other how it was that European horses (well British and Irish horses) were bred to run faster than American horses.
American horses run on drugs which are illegal in Britain and Ireland. Not only can American “druggee nags” not win the turf races, they can’t even beat the Japs on the dirt.
Let’s remember that Del Mar is American and on the coast of Southern California. I am British and on the banks of the river Thames! It is wonderful to have a wallet full of pound notes (metaphorically!).

But the USA bested Canada in the World Series last night, with a little help from some other Japanese.
