Is Freedom going to make us rethink retirement – Damion?

Damian Stancombe

I am intrigued by what Damion is trying to do as so far I have read a lot of statements but have yet to have much to get my teeth into. Here is a recent one about how the press statement about the fact that he was going back to work went down.

It went down very well Damion, we are all pleased that you are going back to work! From freedom to Freedom – clever!  Meanwhile, those of us at work want to know what we can expect!

I spent last Friday morning with Bec Wilson , Damion – you introduced her to me using your blogs when you were down under.

Bec is a little younger than us both and very Australian and I think she is doing for Australia what Freedom could do for the UK. The impression I get is that she works very hard!

She is also promoting a way to manage retirement which is rather different than the way that the Pension Minister outlined his plans for UK pensions. For Torsten,  the emphasis is on pension not wealth. Now I know that the wealthy can and do opt out of work and pensions.  But a lot of the nice certainties over tax and house and inheritance and  – well wealth – are up for discussion and Rachel Reeves looks likely to ask some awkward questions later in the year. I suspect that she’ll be stern about us gadding about!

Are you going to tell us what you consider Freedom is about? If it is about freedom from pensions then say so, you will be building a bridge to the wealthy as Bec is – retirement as a playground – not a playpen! The company behind our work telling Australian’s what gets a tick is FE fundinfo. Is this what you have in mind?

I am not being divisive but I want to know what the CEO of Freedom means! You’re not short of telling us what you’re up to, I’m keen to hear more than slogans!

David Brown’s excellent post got a blog which proved popular on here. Here it is!

IF retirement is worth a rethink – I’d be pleased to hear why you’ve gone back to work.

I never stopped working. Being a self employed specialist who enjoyed what I did meant that I could not be ‘retired’ by an employer. So with mind still fully functional I just kept taking on new assignments. I have now at 82 decided to pack up my laptop. Having had the good sense to keep funding my SIPP I have plenty to live off. But I am quite bored without the challenge of having to fight for new projects and travel extensively to carry them out. I have never had time or inclination to play golf and I have travelled more than I ever wanted. However I am enjoying growing vegetables and have taken up carpentry and have found some intellectual stimulation’ teaching English to refugees. So my advice is ‘don’t give up work’ and keep your mind active.
