Girl Football Power doesn’t need investment talk just yet!

I had got a glimpse of what was to come yesterday.

I now can read my newspaper complete with that street bedecked with our Ladies football team earning a headline from the Financial Times which is some compliment (for that paper!)

The tournament attracted a record attendance of more than 657,000 fans across the group stages and knockout matches.

The watchers on Sunday nights were phenomenal, the final was streamed on ITV and BBC and streamed. Here’s the BBC

A peak live audience of 12.2 million watched England’s historic back-to-back Women’s Euro final on Sunday evening across all BBC platforms, making it the most watched television moment of 2025 across all TV broadcasters.

Online, the BBC Sport’s live page pulled in a staggering 11.4 million views as fans were gripped to see which country would come out on top.

The unprecedented victory which saw the Lionesses retain their title as European Champions peaked at 11.6 million on BBC One – 59% of all TV audiences – with an additional 4.2 million streams of the match on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app.

Overall, the tournament was streamed 15.5 million times across BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website & app –20% of these were from 16-35’s, highlighting strong engagement from younger audiences throughout the competition. The BBC’s TV coverage alone also reached 22.1 million.

You want to know how to tap into Britain’s positivity, you learn your lessons from this moment – ironically Kier Starmer was stuck up in Scotland having a high-profile dinner with Trump in one of Trump’s golf-courses! I wonder whether Trump got the message from Britain’s attention to female football!

The truth is that unlike Glastonbury and Oasis , the Ladies Football didn’t line the pockets of FT’s investors, there had to be a consultant on hand to spoil the fun!

Jennifer Haskel, a sports expert at consultancy Deloitte, cautioned that the Lionesses’ success

“doesn’t necessarily mean that everything’s going to be picture perfect from now on”. “We still need to continue to build and continue to showcase growth from . . . new fan engagement, new ticket strategies, new commercial strategies that are specific to the women’s game,”

The FT tries to work out how  money can be made out of the new craze for Ladies Football. That’s not quite what I’d expect to be foremost in our minds this week or weeks to come!

In my mind is how to get over to the Mall for mid-day to watch the Ladies make it to Buckingham palace. I have the important business of hosting Paul Todd of Nest telling us how he wants his pension to help us spend our savings.

I hope his session will include a mention of how we are enjoying ourselves right now and a reminder for those obsessed by “adequacy” that watching the arrival of our Ladies at the home of our King needs no money at all!

The manner of the Lioness win surely has a message for those seeking to improve the outcomes of occupational pension arrangements whether in CDC or reopening DB accrual – do not give up and reappraise all options even those that others have eschewed.

I went down to Buckingham Palace after the Nest/Paul Todd event this morning. It gave me a good feel about the youngsters who will benefit from what Nest and others will manage. It was uplifting
