For the second Euros in a row, England is champion and us blokes must recognise our women as winners. We men haven’t won a tournament of any magnitude since I was 4 in 1966. Our women are winners , I won’t go into why…

In these past three years women’s football in England has catapulted itself into the mainstream. The players are cover stars; big stadiums sell out year on year; the long reactionary tail of cynicism and misogyny has been silenced.
We have great women, Arsenal were the stand out tournament club with Russo, Kelly and Michelle Agyemang the pride of the country as well as their club. We won when they were upfront.
I and my partner loved it, loved the craziness for the fourth time believing that our team had no chance. We felt that way against France (where we were hopeless), against Sweden where we were hopeless but saved ourselves through awful (some) penalties. We were hopeless against Italy until the end when Kelly and Agyemang saved us and for almost all the game against Spain last night, we looked second best. Never can a team have been behind so much and won a major football tournament. We will love it for years!
Here is the moment Russo scored from a great cross from Kelly

We couldn’t believe Russo did this on purpose in real time, but she did! That photo is the difference between England and Spain, Spain were elegant losers, we weren’t! You will not often see a shot of a goal with only one of the scoring side in the box, it was odd and wonderful!
Roarsome lionesses
We are in love with ladies football anyway, my club – Yeovil – were one of the first of the new breed of premier lady sides, we had and carry the idea though Yeovil ladies have not kept pace with the big clubs.
My partner and I don’t mind so long as we have a national team we can get behind and though my household were convinced from before the tournament’s start that we had no chance , having watched as the old guard walked away , how our best players seemed always injured and how we had to tramp overseas to defend a title we’d only ever won at home.

Sports woman like
It really is quite unsportsmanlike to win as underdogs. Should there be a phrase for it – “sports woman like”.
There were two occasions in her short time on the pitch when Michelle Agyemang was penalised for Patri’s dive . Her huge smile of disbelief was a thing to cherish, so sports woman like

Cheering them home
Last time I got to follow the girls into Trafalgar Square .Tomorrow I might cheer them in the Mall, after hosting our web-show with Paul Todd. I could do with a bit more female wit!

Starting at 12.10pm, the bus will drive past fans along The Mall before ending with a staged ceremony at the Queen Victoria Memorial in front of Buckingham Palace at around 12.30pm.
