The liberal answer for American students;- BRITAIN!

Cambridge Gay!

Cambridge LGBT 100 is in physical form at Girton College Cambridge. You can view the exhibition here.  My son who left Girton very happily, could not explain what the physical form of LGBT looks like

Some of the people picture went to Cambridge when I was there (late 70s early 80s). One was a friend – I did not know he was “queer” as he’d be known then, I’m pleased he’s smiling today!

We will see in the LGBT generation of the 202os more ethnic diversity and I hope more diversity of backgrounds. But the physical form?

I don’t know what physical form means either ,  but it’s nice to see such healthy developments in universities. Back in my time the camp end of college life happened on the arts side and the liberal side,

I have highlighted the pride we have in our UK college system for more than its liberal and creative arts, Simon Shama has written a wonderful piece explaining how this tradition entered into American tradition , though it is being chased away at the moment. You can access if you are quick with this link.

And of course what is bad for the USA is good for the UK.

Fantastic article from Simon Shama in weekend FT  and this today (free link) https://on.ft.com/3Eqv2P2  Feel free to share, I think each gets three reads!

of course there are many Americans and Brits who achieve extraordinary things without a higher education as our various universities achieve.

But the numbers are stunning and very encouraging, not just for our universities but for our university teachers and other staff who have been the subject of this blog.

The message coming out of UK universities, Cambridge or elsewhere is that gay people do not have to display their behaviour but they can do if they want. I know some of these people, of others and know nothing about others but I’m glad that they are happy to talk of their sexuality on an LGBT website

all of them are identifiable – as I did with Ruth Ellis (but not on my photos I’m afraid!Let us not suppose that LGBT is a kinder acronym than it is in America

So;

  1. If you are a student or a student’s parent wanting a liberal education
  2. If you are excited by LGBT tolerance to the point of celebration
  3. If you are sick of your American university’s de-funding and de-liberation
  4. If you want to be out of the way of Trump’s point of view

Then you might think of switching to a British University Pension Scheme which is better in a number of ways – one of which is the excellent pension it pays its teachers.

It strikes me that intellectual capital is not part of Trump’s armoury, Simon Schama’s essay at the weekend shows just what intellectual capacity have been invested in America’s university system. Our system of higher education will be excellent value for money for America’s want a liberal education and we should be delighted to say so.
