Is American money coming to Britain as an export from their rich?

This is a fascinating idea and one that Mary McDougall and Emma Dunkley pick up on.

UK wealth managers say enquiries from US-based investors worried by the actions of Donald Trump and his administration and seeking to move money from the country have risen markedly.

Rathbones, RBC Brewin Dolphin, Evelyn Partners and Schroders Cazenove told the Financial Times that more US clients were looking to move a greater portion of their wealth to the UK, while others had already done so.

I have no idea what is going on in this “wealth” space but I am not against us offering Americans the option to invest through UK fund managers and hopefully into UK investments.

I am in agreement with this commentator.

I’m putting together a Buy List of TFS (Tariff Free Shares) Which are mainly UK based companies with dividend yields in excess of 4%

Two examples are National Grid and Segro

There is a simple opportunity for Britain today, we offer overseas investors happiness for their money in the UK . Firstly by making Britain  IHT exempt on money that arrives from abroad.

Great time for Reeves to change her non dom rules to encourage people to stay and invest in the UK

Secondly attracting as many US people to the country who want to renounce the US and bring their tech , education and finance skills here.

One commentator is pretty firm here. To a flamer from America claiming that what is happening in the States is a blip comes the essential question,

How does it feel to have incinerated 5tn in two days?

Trump is not doing anything unexpected. He is the man who has laughed off criminal convictions and claims that he is above rules set out by his country about a third five year right to the presidency, we should not be surprised that he is given the right to do what he is doing, he has been sanctioned by his electorate.

Here is the stated view of “an American” -again on the FT chatroom

Some people are saying this second coming of the punk from Queens is America’s Brexit. Our moment when radical right wing ideology got to do irreversible damage to our reputation, our public sector and our economy. I don’t disagree.

If Americans are saying this in quantities (and the evidence is they are) then what about British expats living in the USA.

We envy the Americans for their lifestyle and wealth but that question sticks in my gullet. I have good British friends living on both sides of the USA and wonder how they feel about living in the USA at this time.

We should be inviting those smart people who have made fortunes to bring back their money to the UK too.

We should be  very proud of being British and starting to think of the opportunities for restoring our place for decency in the eyes of many who have left or who might want to come to this country,

We have made immigration a bad word.  It shouldn’t be. We need to be an open country and if a way to make it possible to include those who have nothing, is to make it easy for those who have a lot, I am for it.

Some banks like HSBC this morning are down 15% in Asian openings but why the surprise? Andrew Smithers warned about q levels that made no sense and this correction just needed some clown to light the blue touch paper and retire to play golf.

Infrastructure and private markets have been a good option for some time. Farage/Gove/Johnson and Brexit was a pilot for the real thing.

Does this impact on the thinking about surplus redirection?
