Tom – 2024 edition
Steve Goddard’s secured Pension PlayPen’s playmate of the decade, gorgeous Tom McPhail, for Tuesday’s session.
He is poking his head into the lion’s mouth next Tuesday. Labour politics is high on the agenda of our regular audience while we have a number of experts who have lined up against the lifetime pension concept.
The last time I saw a Labour politician, Michael Johnson was explaining his and Tom’s work for Cushon on the lifetime pension idea. I guess it could be better called “lifetime pot” as I don’t hear Tom or Michael stressing that the pot for life model would generate a wage for life.
Gill Furniss was at that meeting, but she’s now stood down (for personal reasons). I don’t see any replacement for Gill anytime so for now we have no shadow pensions minister, no opposition pension policy and nothing but a lot of speculation as to what we’ll get next year.
My idle speculation is that we might see Gregg McClymont in the job, peering down from the upper house, but he’d need to keep working for IFS which might prove a difficulty.
Maybe Tom might stand for the Liberals , they seem to be rather good at producing out of the box pension ministers. After all – we’re getting a hung parliament – aren’t we?

INVITATION Coffee Morning – The Labour Government’s pension policy? Hit or Miss? Plus Lifetime pensions CPD included
Type – Online
When – Tuesday May 14th, 2024 at 10:30 am
At our next event, industry guru and Pension Playpen “All Star” Tom Mcphail will be presenting his thoughts on a potential Labour Government.
What are there main proposals for Pension Policy?
Will there be any change to the Regulatory regime?
How about tax status and AE contribution levels?
Can the industry cope with more change?
These are some of the points that Tom will cover.
In addition, as an alternative to Sirs Steve Webb’s “magnetic pensions” Tom will also put forward his Lifetime solution for pension small pots.
Small and multiple pension pots are a challenge for policymakers, the pensions industry and consumers alike. Following Sir Steve’s recent presentation on Pension Playpen,Tom is going to take a deeper dive into the main alternative proposal of Lifetime Provider, on which the Government has been consulting.
Tom is currently Director of Public Affairs at The Lang Cat and is also a Governor of the Pensions Policy Institute. Prior to these roles he was Head of Policy at Hargreaves Lansdown for over 18 years and helped the DWP review MAPs.
