A new “preferred site” for the ancient Billingsgate and Smithfield fresh food markets has been identified in the Royal Docks in Newham.
The new location for the fish and meat on Albert Island next to City Airport – agreed by traders, the City Corporation and the GLA – comes after an earlier plan to relocate to Dagenham was scrapped because of soaring costs.
The historic markets are due to be closed in their current locations in Poplar and the City by 2028 – subject to the successful passage of the Parliamentary Bill.
