We did not sing “let it rain” as the rain came down on us, nor could we meet the Boss at Mary’s Place (he didn’t sing the song), but 100,000 or so of us, had a pretty good time at Wembley last night and it looks like some members of Transport for London had a good time too
I watched the event from around where Paddy Madden fired home the first half goal that would see Yeovil Town get promoted to the Championship over 10 years ago.
Musical highlights
Back to back performances of Spirit in the Night and Reason to believe. Land of Hopes and Dreams and a magnificent version of Because the Night.
And the cover of the Commodores, Nightshift, which is even better than last year’s version.
Lowlight, a scratch performance of Lonely Day that kicked things off and Long Walk Home (the politics don’t play to us Bruce) , the dreary Youngstown and some indulgent piano playing that diminished Racing in the Street and in particular the piercing Hammond Organ that we heard too little of!
Putting aside a couple of weak songs, the E street band were bigger and better than ever and Springsteen – who is not bouncing quite as he did, delivered a stand-out performance, he is less than ten years younger than Biden and not much more than 10 years older than Harris, he is the acceptable face of the America gerontocracy.
The tie stayed on all night and the waistcoat only came off for a raucous rendition of “Twist and Shout”. There was no celebrity appearance, this was standalone Bruce for 180 minutes without the man taking a single break.
And for a crowd of a certain age, this was high energy stuff.
