John Hatchard is dead – he was a good man

John Hatchard

I never met John Hatchard, sat on a board with him, discussed business problems and talked about our mutual love of Dorset countryside. I cannot claim to be his friend but know he was special.

He focussed on helping rich people buy houses for a law firm called Moore Barlow. He started with them in 1971 and wound up a principal consultant in 2019, he was still a consultant to them in 2025. I am not rich and don’t have a rich person’s house but my discussions with John told me that he had total integrity and a loving sense of humour.

He spent much of his latter years abroad, in the Caribbean with his wife. I feel impertinent in wishing him well but I believe in good and that is what I believe drove this man. This morning I will be saying my farewell in the presence of Wesleyan Christians and I will pray that his goodwill continue to inspire me and others who knew him (better).

This blog shows that you do not have to work with someone long or hard, to demonstrate good business ethics and personal kindness. If there is a chance to pay my respects formally, I will make my way down to Winterbourne Zelston or wherever a place to commemorate his life is.

To his wife and family, my thoughts. I come from the north of Dorset and I know my family will send their thoughts as we toasted John over Christmas. If you knew John and want to wish his soul well, please use the comments or send a note to henry@agewage.com and I will send it on.
