There are few more controversial issues than the supposed inter-generational divide between pensioners with houses and pensions and young workers with neither.
At today’s Pension PlayPen we will be exploring one answer. Wayhome look to pension schemes to buy homes which can then be purchased by those saving for a pension so they can live in their own property at retirement – rent free.
I like Wayhome and I want everyone to come to this event – so if you find paying towards the running costs of Pension PlayPen a little much, here’s a free link to today’s event.

As those of us who heard Nick Lyons speak at the equity release summit last month will remember, there are two great stores of wealth in this country. One is our stock of funded pensions and the other our stock of housing.
The equity release product unlocks capital from the housing stock and is generally used to supplement pensions. But we heard during the summit of many pensioners using their house to create the deposit needed to getting Next Gen onto the housing ladder. This is all well and good but doesn’t work for those for whom the bank of Mum and Dad is closed.
For those in “generation rent” who want to get themselves onto the housing ladder , the choices are more difficult
- Save for a deposit – easier said than done with current rental prices
- Take out a high loan to value mortgage – expensive and hard to get unless you are very well paid
- Wayhome

Wayhome was last at the Pension PlayPen in 2017 when it was starting out as “Unmortgaged”. Back then it was Nigel and Rayhan Rafiq-Omar , Rayhan (the original CEO) left in 2019 but Nigel has shown remarkable persistence (as has Pension PlayPen)
We enjoyed hosting them then and are pleased to welcome back, not this time as a Counting House lunch but at a Pension PlayPen Coffee Morning. We’ve followed them in between as they found investment from Allianz and are pleased to see things working out.
We last came across Nigel at the DG publishing innovation summit , pictured below
