Refugees in your Home

If you are interested in getting on with helping refugees get rehoused , you may wish to get on with it. If so, there is a charity you can contact now which can help you. Thanks to Louise Inward for pointing me to it.

Refugees at Home is a UK charity which connects those with a spare room in their home to refugees and asylum seekers in need of somewhere to stay. So far it has been responsible for placing 2,604 guests with a total of 199,995 placement nights.

There are a number of questions I’d wanted to ask as we work out if we can help. The most obvious is

1. How do I apply?

You can now register an interest in taking in refugees on  this Government website

It’s good to see that the Government is waking up to its humanitarian responsibilities and practicing what it preaches as point one of its “Six Point Plan” to ease the situation in Ukraine. I’m pleased to see that there will be no cap on the numbers allowed into the UK and it doesn’t seem refugees will need to prove they have relations in the UK.

This bespoke scheme will offer a route to those who want to come to the UK who have someone here willing to provide them with a home. It will enable individuals, charities, community groups and businesses to volunteer accommodation and provide a route to safety for Ukrainians, and their immediate family members, forced to escape their homeland.

Sponsors should provide accommodation for as long as they are able, but we have a minimum expectation of 6 months.

Someone is eligible for the scheme if they are a Ukrainian national or the immediate family member of a Ukrainian national, and were resident in Ukraine prior to 1 January 2022.

Britain will welcome as many arrivals as possible, based on the number of sponsors.

People arriving under this scheme will be able to:

  • Live and work in the UK for up to three years
  • Access healthcare, benefits, employment support, education, and English language tuition

Housing Justice is another charity helping re-house refugees
