Yeovil Town; stand by your man!

Darren Way – Yeovil Town Manager

This blog hasn’t heard much about Yeovil Town lately; yesterday the Glovers recorded their highest league win (0-6) at table topping Newport County. The man pictured above, Darren Way (Ferret) is now a local hero for managing the team through thick and thin.

Those who organised the “Way out” campaign are presumably keeping quiet about their vilification of their manager over the past three seasons.

I haven’t always been a Yeovil Town fan, I used to support Bournemouth as a kid. But my son wanted to support Yeovil – as did Mad Uncle Greg, and when Bournemouth sold out to dirty money – I switched. The first match I went to saw us win away at Swindon. It was days after Way’s playing career had ended ( a horrible car crash). Each goal that went in  the crowd sang  his name.

For a long time , Way played second fiddle to the more charismatic Terry Skiverton, but in the end – Way’s loyalty and quiet good sense one through. Terry is still with the club and is #2 to Darren – in a game of egos , the partnership is an unusual one.

The most exciting away team in the league?

Based purely on this season’s results, Yeovil are the away team of the season

We’re scoring an average of over 3 goals away from home and if we could only translate that form into home performances, we’d be top of the league.

Way- who has been criticised for producing overly defensive teams – seems to have reinvented Yeovil.

Hold that thought.

Any football fan , knows that runs like ours don’t last; Yeovil may well end up – where every pundit predicted them six weeks ago – relegated to the Conference.

But I’m writing these few words so I can bottle the feeling of pride I have for our team right now. I am sure there are many fans who have done the same. If you are a Newport County Fan, and I new a few steelworkers who favour them over Swansea, remember you are still above us – we all have bad days! Yeovil got hammered a lot worse than you by Luton last year!

I was on Lady Lucy yesterday afternoon with just enough battery in the phone to follow the game on twitter.

Hold this thought.

Very proud for Darren Way (and Terry).
