I had an interesting discussion with my 15 year old son this morning.
He tells me that his Facebook timeline is his memory of his teenage years.
You have to be 13 to be on Facebook though I reckon he has been hanging around on the site a little longer than that.
In any event, Facebook provides him with a diary of his teenage years in images, videos and text.
For kids growing up today , Facebook is more than a messaging device, it’s a permanent record of their growing up.
Many adults tut tut about the unfortunate consequences of this signature but I have heard few comments about the positive side to the coin.
Kids want an identity, they want to understand how they are seen by others. They also want to see themselves through the Facebook timeline.
We may struggle to understand identity in these terms, but Olly doesn’t. He’s proud of his timeline, proud enough to make sure I don’t ever get on it!
And that’s the other thing. Facebook creates a world circumscribed by those you friend and those who friend you. It is an ideal world that kids can control.
Facebook gives kids the space to learn who they are without the intrusion of unwanted authority. Parents, teachers, coaches and big brothers take note
